Tennis Elbow (Epicondylitis)

Tennis Elbow, formally known as Epicondylitis, is a swelling of the tendons causing pain in the arm and elbow. Tennis elbow does not always directly relate to playing tennis, it is usually a symptom of over exertion of the tendons just below the elbow on the forearm.

What Causes Tennis Elbow?

Any repetitive action can put a strain on the elbow muscles which in turn places stress on the tendons. Some examples include:

  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Gardening
  • Playing an instrument such as the guitar
  • Typing
  • Painting
  • Driving

Tennis Elbow Symptoms?

  • A tight knot or ball just below the elbow on the forearm.
  • Pain when lifting, gripping an object or extending the forearm
  • Tenderness on the forearm.

Tennis Elbow Treatments

The good news is that tennis elbow is a very common problem and is easily treated. There are a number of things you can do to help alleviate the pain.

  1. Ice the elbow – it is recommended to do this three or four times a day for 20-30 minutes.
  2. Visit a physiotherapist to strengthen and stretch the muscles.
  3. Wear an elbow support 

How to Wear a Tennis Elbow Clasp

  1. Locate the tender spot on the forearm.
  2. Measure 10cm down from where the pain and tenderness occurs.
  3. Place the clasp/brace on this area with the compression pad/velcro strap – depending on the type of clasp used – resting on the tender spot.
  4. Have the brace firm on the arm but not tight. It should reinforce the lateral muscles without cutting off the circulation.
