A hip fracture is a serious injury which can be particulary detrimental if you are over the age of 65. Older people are more at risk to hip fractures due to a number of contributing factors such as weakening bones and balance and vision problems.

A hip fracture almost always requires surgical repair or replacement followed by months of physical therapy. taking steps to improve bone density and prevent falls is the best way to help prevent fracture.

HipSavers are proven to help prevent fracture by cushioning the most vulnerable part of the hip on both sides of the body.

HipSavers are worn like underwear and are almost invisible under clothing.

A study was conducted on 106 geriatric patients in 2004 over a 1.5 year period. The HipSavers showed an 80% reduction in hip fractures with 11 hip fractures prevented overall.

The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association.

Symptoms of a hip fracture

  • Inability to move immediately after a fall
  • Severe pain in the hip or groin
  • Inability to bear weight on your leg on the injured side of your hip
  • Brusing or swelling in or around the injured area
The most common cause of a hip fracture is due to a fall but any severe impact to the hip – such as a car crash – can cause the hip to fracture.

Risk Factors

Age
The number of hip fractures increases with age. This is due to degradation in bone density and muscle mass as well as problems with vision and balance.

Your Sex
Bone density in women tends to decrease faster than in men. The drop in Oestrogen levels during menopause accelerates accelerates bone loss.

Medical Conditions
Certain medications – particularily ones containing cortisone – if taken long term. Other medications can cause dizziness and loss of balance.

Nutritional problems
Vitamin D and calcium are vital for bone nutrition. Lack of these in a persons diet can cause brittle bones that would be prone to fracture.

Physical Inactivity
Weight bearing exercises can help imprve bone density. Use weight cuffs during exercise will add extra resistance to your workout routine to help improve bone density.
